Philadelphia Flyers Out for Sweep of Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 4

Written by North Shore Sports, Inc.

The playoffs are officially here! Hockey betting action continues with a clash of teams from the Atlantic Division on Wednesday night when the #4 Pittsburgh Penguins will attempt to tally a win to stay alive against the #5 Philadelphia Flyers in the conference quarterfinals.

The Eastern Conference Quarterfinals continue on Wednesday, April 18th at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA. The NBC Sports Network and TSN will have live television coverage of the clash between the Pittsburgh Penguins (51-27-7) and the Philadelphia Flyers (50-26-9) starting at 7:30 ET.

NHL Betting Odds

Pittsburgh Penguins (+110)
Philadelphia Flyers (-130)
Total: 6.5 (Over -120)

When the dust settled and the Flyers took a third straight victory on the hockey playoff betting odds against the Penguins on Sunday afternoon, the chants from the faithful here at the Wells Fargo Center could be heard loud and clear. “You can’t beat us!” was chanted over and over again in the final minutes of an 8-4 victory.

It is amazing that Pittsburgh was once the clear favorite on the Stanley Cup hockey odds, and now, it looks like it’s simply just dead in the water. The team looks as frustrated as could be, and even the normally tame Sidney Crosby took off the gloves in Game 3’s romp of a loss.

The bigger question on the ice is what the heck the Penguins need to do defensively to stop the Flyers from running rampant. Marc-Andre Fleury was finally taken out of the lineup after allowing 17 goals in a span of just seven periods throughout the first three games of this series, but Brent Johnson wasn’t all that much better. If the team is going to rely on a third goalie, it would be Brad Thiessen, who had a 3.72 GAA in his five outings in the regular season.

There are inevitably going to be suspensions handed down all over the place for all of the fighting that took place on Sunday afternoon. Expect to see Arron Asham on the suspended list after taking a match penalty for hitting a defenseless skater, and there could be a heck of a lot more where that came from as well.

If there is a problem that Philly has, it is that its defense just hasn’t been that good. Ilya Bryzgalov is getting his wins, but he has allowed 12 goals in this series and hasn’t strung together more than about 15 minutes of scoreless hockey at any point since the start of Game 2. We also have to remember that the Flyers have fallen behind 1-0 in 13 of their last 15 clashes on the hockey gambling odds, something that could prove to be problematic if there is another slow start on Wednesday night.
